ABOUT JENNIFER SHANNON

Jennifer Shannon is a freelance musician and private flute instructor in the Beaumont/Southeast Texas area. She is the adjunct Instructor of Flute at Lee College and an adjunct Instructor of Music teaching music appreciation courses at Lamar University. She can regularly be heard performing locally with the the Southeast Texas Winds and Percussion and as a substitute with the Symphony of Southeast Texas on flute and piccolo. Jennifer is also the flutist in Beau Deux, a flute and clarinet (Ronald White) duo based out of Beaumont, Texas. Beau Deux was recently selected and performed a musical showcase at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio this past February. In addition to performing and teaching, Jennifer is currently a student at Lamar University working towards a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D). 

In 2014, Jennifer graduated with her master’s degree in flute performance with a perfect GPA from the University of Oklahoma under the direction of Dr. Valerie Watts. At OU, she was the flute studio's teaching assistant and taught the flute ensemble, secondary flute lessons, non major flute lessons, flute techniques for the music education instrumental techniques courses, played principal flute in the Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra and graduate woodwind quintet. In the spring 2013 she was hired by OU as interim flute instructor while Dr. Valerie Watts took sabbatical leave. In her time at OU, Jennifer was twice awarded the Provost's Certificate of Distinction for Outstanding Graduate Teaching, which made her one of the top Graduate Teaching assistants at the University of Oklahoma. 

Jennifer's bachelors degree is in Flute Performance from the University of Houston where studied with Ms. Jennifer Keeney. There, she served as principal flute of the University's Wind Ensemble and was principal flute for several operas for the Edyth Bates Old Opera Program. She graduated in 2012 with Magna Cum Laude Honors.  

Jennifer can be heard on several cds from Naxos and Marc Custom. Jennifer has studied and performed in masterclasses for over 20 world renowned flutists. Her primary role as a flutist though is music education. Her studio boasts talented flutists of all ages including Texas All State Band members and UIL Superior rated musicians. She has taught summer music programs, master classes and lessons to flutists across the United States.

Jennifer's professional affiliations include the National Flute Association, Houston Flute Club, Texas Music Educator's Association, Sigma Alpha Iota, Tau Beta Sigma, and Pi Kappa Lambda.
